The redness, crusting, and peeling you see are signs that EFUDIX® is working to eliminate the abnormal cells.
While you may find this stage of treatment to be unattractive and somewhat uncomfortable, it is important that you DO NOT STOP THERAPY without first obtaining your doctor’s approval..
How do you know when to stop using Efudix?
Stop efudix if you experience a severe reaction (shortness of breath; swelling of your lips,face, or tongue; hives). Contact us if you have any problems during treatment. Any lesions that fail to resolve with efudix treatment should be re-examined.
How long does it take for redness to go away after fluorouracil treatment?
Fluorouracil may cause redness, soreness, scaling, and peeling of affected skin after 1 or 2 weeks of use. This effect may last for several weeks after you stop using the medicine and is to be expected. Sometimes a pink, smooth area is left when the skin treated with this medicine heals.
Does efudex make you tired?

Is efudex a form of chemotherapy?
Drug Type: Efudex is an anti-cancer (“antineoplastic” or “cytotoxic”) chemotherapy drug. Efudex is classified as an “antimetabolite.” (For more detail, see “How Efudex Works” section below).
What should I put on skin after efudex treatment?
The day after your last Efudex application, begin moisturizing all treated areas with either Vaseline or Aquaphor Healing Ointment (over the counter). Apply frequently every day to keep skin soft. The treated area can be pink for several months and is more susceptible to getting sun burned.
Can I shower after applying efudex?
Do not use cosmetics or other skin medication on treated areas without first obtaining your doctor’s approval. You can get your face wet in the shower. However, it is advisable not to apply immediately before showering.
Can I use moisturizer with fluorouracil?
After using fluorouracil cream, wait 2 hours before applying sunscreen or moisturizer to the treated area. Do not use other skin products including creams, lotions, medications, or cosmetics unless instructed by your doctor to do so.
How do you know when to stop fluorouracil?
Erythema develops in several days. After continued application, the damaged skin becomes painful and inflamed with a beefy-red appearance with erosions and crusting. At this point, the medication should be stopped.
Does efudex help with wrinkles?
Patients getting such treatment have also reported softer, smoother, less wrinkled skin — and now, a new study confirms those skin improvements. The study included 21 patients with actinic keratoses who applied a 5% fluorouracil skin cream called Efudex to their entire face twice daily for two weeks.
How effective is Efudix cream?
How useful is efudix? It is one of the most effective treatments we have for actinic keratosis. It has around a 75% chance of removing at least 75% of actinic keratosis from treated areas for one year. It can be an effective treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma in situ (Bowen’s disease).
How do you apply efudex to your face?
Apply the cream with a clean fingertip. If you are treating your whole face, use four pea-sized amounts of cream; one on the chin, each cheek and the forehead. For selected areas, just use one pea-sized amount of cream. Wash your hands after applying the Efudix cream.
Do you rub Efudix cream in?
Wash with water and mild soap in the shower and do not rub the area. Patting to wash and patting to dry is preferred. The ten minutes following a shower or washing are key. The skin tightens and throbs much more so during healing than during treatment as it craves the Efudex.
What does the erosion stage of efudex look like?
Erosion, on the face, feels like having a mask on your face that you can’t remove. The same goes for the chest. The cream absorbs more and more quickly as the days go by, and the treated area stiffens, tugs and pulls when you move, and this can cause the burning sensations to temporarily intensify.
How long after applying efudex Can I shower?
